A short period of immobilization in a below-knee cast or Aircast* results in a quicker recovery from a severe ankle sprain than use of either tubular compression bandage (TCB) or a Bledsoe boot. In an article published in The Lancet, Professor Sarah Lamb, Warwick Clinical Trials Unit, University of Warwick, UK, and colleagues conclude by recommending below-knee casts, as these show the widest range of benefits.
The study included 584 patients and recommended 10 days of a cast.
Severe ankle sprains in this category are not common; however, care to the injured ligament is important no matter what stage of sprain is involved.
Should you have any questions about an ankle sprain, call any office of ECRC Physical Therapy and talk with one of the PTs to receive appropriate answers about your condition. The PTs can also help you recovery quicker, returning to work and/or sport as soon as possible in a safe but strong manner.
