APTA Touts Benefits of Physical Activity to TIME

The cover story of the August 17 issue of TIME magazine made statements that suggest exercise is not an effective health tool, particularly as it pertains to weight loss. To help educate the readers of TIME, APTA joined a group of organizations to respond to the piece and tout the benefits of physical activity, underscoring the importance of exercise not only to weight loss, but also to overall health.

Aug 17, 2009 9:20 AM - Spearheaded by the American College of Sports Medicine, the letter to the editor (composed with the input of and signed by several organizations, including APTA) emphasizes that exercise is a powerful preventive tool that can yield benefits far beyond weight loss. The letter made it clear that exercise has been consistently shown to prevent and treat chronic conditions, boost mood and prevent depression, and help to maintain functionality for enhanced quality of life and increased life expectancy.
